NBA player Tristan Thompson has been granted temporary guardianship over his younger brother, Amari, after their mother’s sudden death. Amari, who is 17 years old, is unable to care for himself.
During a court hearing on Wednesday, it was decided that Tristan will act as Amari’s guardian for the time being. Tristan had filed a petition for temporary guardianship a few weeks ago. The hearing for permanent guardianship is scheduled for November.
Tristan wasn’t present in court during the hearing, but his attorney spoke on his behalf via Zoom.
According to TMZ, Tristan filed for temporary guardianship because Amari’s father, Trevor Douglas Thompson, has been absent from his life. Trevor did not receive notice of Wednesday’s proceeding as his whereabouts are unknown.
Tristan’s mother, Andrea, passed away earlier this year, which prompted him to take steps to protect his brother. Amari has already met the KarJenners, and it’s likely that Tristan will continue to have their support.
As Amari approaches 18 and faces mental and physical disabilities, the issue of conservatorship will also be discussed. Tristan will be responsible for overseeing any money left behind in their mother’s probate estate, which currently amounts to about $103k.
During Andrea’s funeral, members of the Kardashian family flew to Toronto to support Tristan.
