In a bizarre turn of events, a high school football coach from Brooklyn High School in Ohio has resigned after using the word “Nazi” as a play call during a game. It’s safe to say this wasn’t your typical audible. The controversial incident occurred during the first half of a game against Beachwood High School, a predominantly Jewish school in the Cleveland suburb of Beachwood. Needless to say, it didn’t go over well with the opposing team or the community. The Brooklyn Hurricanes’ head coach, Tim McFarland, and his players were accused of repeatedly yelling out “Nazi” during the first 30 minutes of the game. Beachwood Schools Superintendent Robert Hardis had seen enough and threatened to pull his players off the field if the offensive language continued. Thankfully, sanity prevailed and the coach agreed to change the play call during halftime. Hardis confirmed, “Brooklyn’s coach acknowledged using this word as the play call, apologized, and agreed to change it when the teams returned for the second half.” Crisis averted, right? Well, not quite. According to Hardis, although the word was no longer used in the second half, Brooklyn players freely used another racial slur throughout the rest of the game. Yikes, talk about a lack of sportsmanship. The fallout from this controversy was swift. On Monday, Coach McFarland, who had been with Brooklyn High School for the past two years, decided it was time to step down. It seems he finally realized that using offensive language during a high school football game isn’t a great career move. In a statement released by Brooklyn Schools Superintendent Ted Caleris, the coach expressed deep regret and apologized to both the Beachwood and Brooklyn School Communities for his and his team’s actions. However, it remains to be seen if any disciplinary action will be taken against the players involved. In the wake of this incident, the Brooklyn City Schools made it clear that such hurtful and harmful speech will not be tolerated in any form. Hopefully, this unfortunate incident serves as a lesson for everyone involved and promotes a more inclusive and respectful environment on the football field. As for the players, it remains to be seen if any disciplinary action will be taken. Let’s hope they’ve learned their lesson and choose their words more wisely in the future.
